They are simply Chinese characters. And, it is “氏族” instead of “民族”. So I am not quite agree with the quick answer you got. It is read “ShiZu” which means a group of people under the same family name. And Chinese people all follow the last name of the male blood line which may last for thousands years without changing (unlike western family names). That’s why it starts with the character “氏” (meaning “Family Name”). So it basically means a extended family. Most often, the influential families tended to have a huge population because of the polygyny in ancient China. So the people under the same last name in three or four generations could easily reach 500 and even more. That’s why it is called “族” (meaning “ethnic group”).Thanks to jesuscausescancer for a quick response…re: tatt translation, 民族 is read minzoku in Japanese, which means people as in an ethnic people or tribe. Same meaning in Chinese, but read minzu (both syllables in rising tone)
